I'm not sure what the social contract should say about long term health care. If it is an individual responsibility, surely it will lead to bankruptcy, for the individual or the insurance provider, or the person does without. Is there another alternative aside from Kevorkian?

The alternative is the Canadian style system of health care, which provides long-term health care for all who need it.
The system costs about half as much as the American system, on a per capita basis, without leaving large segments of the population uninsured.

We seem to preclude sensible solutions in our politics by demonizing those solutions as socialism. In this case, I believe that happened when the "public option" was ruled out.
